Sales Assistants are the backbone to any successful store. The role of the Sales Assistant is to maintain certain levels of customer service, merchandising and replenishment within a store. They take payments, offer advice and select items for customers. Being a Sales Assistant is often seen as the most important experience you can get in the retail environment.
A Sales Supervisor is responsible for a team of sales assistants, stock, display and customer service. Good communication and organisational skills are essential.
As a Trainee Store Manager, you'll gain an overall view of how a branch operates and gain experience of every aspect of running a store. You'll learn how to organise yourself and others, and become immersed in branch and company objectives. Specifically, you will help to: look at ways to maximise sales and minimise costs; implement company sales and service initiatives; become involved in recruitment and staff retention; manage a sales team and sell direct to customers.
A Store Manager oversees the day to day running of a retail outlet. It is a busy role that involves mentoring a number of staff, understanding customer profiles and maintaining all back of house duties. A good Store Manager will be good at dealing with people and have an enthusiasm for customer service as well as a good head for business and the fast pace of the retail environment.
A Buying Administration Assistant needs to display brand awareness and be customer focused. A BAA’s tasks would include organising and preparing Fit Meetings and attending the sample library.
An Assistant Buyer works very closely with the Retail Buyer gathering information and analysing trends and data. An Assistant Buyer would be responsible for the Buying Admin Assistant and their training, ensuring that the requirements of the Retail Buyer are met.
A Retail Buyer is responsible for planning and buying in the goods that a company sells. In retail a Buyer works closely with the Merchandising department to analyse consumer buying patterns. A Retail Buyer might also advise the design teams on new trends when planning new ranges.

A Merchandising Admin Assistant would work closely with the Assistant Merchandiser to plan and forecast department sales and stock movement. They must display an insight into the company, the customer profile and retail trends.
An Assistant Merchandiser works closely with the Retail Merchandiser to analyse the different customer profiles and markets. They need to think commercially about how to improve the performance of the company and ensure that the right amount of stock is being brought at the right price.
A Retail Merchandiser would make sure that goods are available in the right stores at the right time and at the right price. The Merchandising department works closely with the Buying department to forecast trends, plan stock and monitor how well the products sells.
VM Assistants work with the Creative Team, designing and dressing the windows or, with the In-Store VM team laying out the fixtures, merchandising the product as well as creating in-store displays. Individuals wanting to pursue a career in VM should be creative, have an understanding of fashion, be able to work as part of a team and be hard working
A Sample Room Assistant will assist the designers to produce sample garments for presentation to suppliers and buyers.
Personal Stylists give fashion advice to ensure that clients will be able to showcase their desired fashion image. They provide insights on how wardrobes should be worn, what accessories will complement a particular outfit and what outfit colour will suit the client. A Personal Stylist must be able to combine the latest fashion trends with the client's personal taste.
An Office Administrator is responsible for the day to day tasks of keeping an office running smoothly, from opening and distributing and sending the post to providing support in organising and running office events. This role can be varied and interesting.
A Visual Merchandiser’s role is to increase sales: first by attracting shoppers into the store through the power of window display, and then through in-store display and layout, which needs to encourage them to remain in the store, purchase and have a positive retail experience so that they return.
The role of a PR and Marketing Assistant is varied and can include general administration involved in public relations and communications, events management, reports and proposals, branding and company image and reputation.
Production managers are responsible for selecting the manufacturing contractors, ensuring goods are produced to the right quality and quantity, on time and at the right price to satisfy the customer’s aspiration. As the UK fashion industry operates in a global environment, production managers are increasingly responsible for the management of supply chains across several countries.
A Public Relations Officer is responsible for promoting good relations between the company, and the public. A PR Officers chief responsibility is to build and maintain the organisations image and reputation, working with the media and producing promotional information such as brochures and websites.
Garment technologists support the design and buying team through all stages of garment product development, from design to manufacture. Garment technologists can be employed by manufacturers or large, high-street retailers. The garment technologist would be involved in agreeing with the designer an appropriate fabric and design to meet the budget target. They would then work with the pattern making department to oversee the sizing, fitting and testing of the pre-production garments. A garment technologist would also analyse product returns and faults.
The pattern cutter is an essential link between the design and manufacturing stages in clothing production and must have the ability to interpret the designer’s sketches and drawings to create working patterns. From the working drawings they create pattern templates graded to suit the range of sizes and type of fit required and work with machinists to make up samples.
Fashion designers may specialise in designing men’s, women’s children’s wear or accessories, they need to be well informed as to the current trends in fashion. Designers are responsible for initiating the design concepts, producing the visual representations, selecting the material type, patterns and colours and overseeing the designs through to the final product. They must understand pattern cutting and clothing construction in order to design wearable garments and provide all the necessary information for the creation of the garment. They may be employed by a wide range of stores, from everyday high-street chains to exclusive design houses, an independent design contractor or as an freelance individual.
Sample machinists are a key part of the clothing design team. They work closely with designers, garment technologists and pattern cutters to create the first made-up sample of a garment design. The sample machinist will work with the designer to achieve the desired end product. Once the construction has been agreed they provide feedback of the specific production details that will be given to the manufacturer.
Artworkers would generally have a high level of skill in the basic graphic design software products, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXpress, Indesign, Freehand and so on. Traditionally, Artworkers would not be expected to have much creative input, but would implement a concept, based on a designer's or Art Director’s brief. High-end Photoshop skills, in particular, are a much sought after skill.
A Graphic Designer develops creative ideas and concepts choosing the appropriate media and style to meet the client’s brief. Graphic design solutions are required for a huge variety of products and activities, such as websites, advertising, books, magazines, posters, computer games, product packaging, exhibitions and displays, corporate communications and corporate identity. The role demands creative flair, up-to-date knowledge of industry software and a professional approach to time, costs and deadlines.

Web designers are responsible for the layout, visual appearance and usability of a website. This role may overlap with that of a Multimedia programmer and web architect. Using a combination of graphic design skills and technical knowledge of how web pages are created. Web designers will have knowledge of graphic design packages such as Fireworks or Photoshop in order to produce basic layout and manipulate images. Skills in e-commerce and server side technologies, such as PHP and .Net, and internet security are also important.
A Graphic Assistant will support the Graphic Designer to help develop creative ideas and concepts, research and select photographic images, develop graphic images and concepts.
You could be a Print & Production Technician Support in a display graphics company. You would be responsible for the Digital Printing of various printed media, ensuring high standards of quality & consistency are maintained in line with production schedules. You would ensure quality control procedures are followed.
You will assist the personal Stylist/Shopper to ensure their time is spent giving 1-1 service. You must be flexible to take on any tasks to meet customer service needs and expectations and build relationships. Work as part of wider store team.
