Daniela Vich, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion student, recently volunteered at London Fashion Week. Here's what she got up to, how she got involved and her advice for those who want to do the same!
At the Fashion Retail Academy, we regularly share industry opportunities with our students, and that's how Daniela found out about volunteering at London Fashion Week.
I regularly keep an eye out for industry experiences shared by FRA, as I’m always keen to take part in projects that can expand my knowledge and network within the fashion world. - Daniela, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion student
Daniela described her role as hands-on and varied, which she loved! During her time at London Fashion Week, she got involved with a wide range of tasks, including:
It was a true 'all-rounder' experience that gave me a real behind-the-scenes look at the effort it takes to deliver a successful show. - Daniela, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion student
The atmosphere at London Fashion Week was exactly what Daniela expected - fast-paced, energetic and inspiring. While there were moments of chaos, she explained that the passion and positivity of the whole team made the experience unforgettable.
It was a real privilege to see how everyone pulled together, from designers to volunteers, to make the event happen. - Daniela, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion
When asked why she applied for the opportunity, Daniela shared:
I’ve always seen London Fashion Week as a hub of creativity, innovation and inclusivity, and volunteering was a chance to be part of that energy. It was also important to me to support Unhidden, a brand whose values of accessibility and representation in fashion truly resonate with me. - Daniela, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion
The course has given me a strong foundation in communication, organisation and teamwork - all of which came into play. As a retail supervisor, I’m used to managing busy environments, and that experience combined with the practical skills I’ve been developing at FRA, helped me to stay calm, adaptable and professional in a high-pressure setting. - Daniela, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion
Daniela's path to the Fashion Retail Academy is a story of passion, heritage and determination:
"I’m Italian, and at 18 I decided to change my life by moving to England. I taught myself the language and worked hard to begin building the path toward my dreams. My love for fashion and craftsmanship started with my Nonno (grandfather), the most elegant and talented tailor from Naples, who moved to the UK in the 1960s to pursue his own dream. I grew up watching him in his studio, designing suits and crafting the most refined pieces for his clients.
I fondly remember playing with his old English typewriter, which he used to write receipts and orders. He never left the house without wearing a suit and a colourful tie for his daily passeggiata in our beautiful Southern Italian town.
Decades later, I wake up every day in the country he cherished so much, knowing that I am fulfilling this dream for both of us. With the most sincere heart, I can say that every time I step into the Fashion Retail Academy I feel at home - in an environment that not only welcomes you but also pushes you to evolve, provided you approach it with the right attitude.”
Daniela hopes other students will take on opportunities like this with enthusiasm and confidence:
"If I were to give advice to future volunteers, I would say: treat it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and share your passion for this industry with everyone around you. By asking the right questions and showing a willingness to take on any kind of task - even last-minute ones - I was entrusted with a variety of responsibilities, for which I am truly grateful."
