Recently, one of our BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion students, Grace Victoria Lees, completed her internship with maebe - the womenswear brand founded by FRA alumni and influencer Molly-Mae Hague.

It's amazing to see a current student to learn from a FRA graduate who's gone on to launch her own successful fashion brand! Here's a look into Grace's experience interning at the brand:

What is maebe?

Launched just a year ago, maebe is a non-seasonal womenswear brand offering accessible luxury: high-quality, every pieces that bride the gap between fast fashion and designer wear. Molly-Mae created the brand to offer something timeless, versatile and true to her interest in fashion.

How Grace Secured the Placement

At the end of her first year, Grace knew she wanted to complete her industry placement with maebe. Through her coursework and personal content, she had already been styling and sharing maebe pieces across her own social media channels.

When the brand began reposting her work, Grace reached out to Molly-Mae directly. This led to conversations with maebe's Brand Director, Elisha, who offered her a placement opportunity.

The placement itself was secured entirely through my own initiative. That process made the experience feel extremely rewarding, but also deeply reminding of the importance to be resilient and patient to pursue in the industry. - Grace Victoria Lees, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion student

Inside the Placement

Grace's role spanned multiple areas of fashion marketing, giving her an insight into:

  • Influencer outreach - researching and identifying individuals for both paid and gifted collaborations
  • Campaign support - sourcing a shoot for maebe's anniversary campaign and helping bring the brand's visions to life
  • Social media strategy - curating content, shaping ideas and analysing performance
  • Shoot production - coordinating resources and assisting on set
It was rewarding knowing that my work had secured the space where the brand’s vision would soon be brought to life, which I could also then experience first-hand. - Grace, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion student

The placement concluded with a shoot day - something Grace described as "the most perfect finish".

Key Takeaways

Beyond gaining industry-specific skills, Grace also grew her confidence in:

  • Organisation and project management
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Balancing creativity with strategy
Completing my placement at Maebe has definitely made me feel more prepared to enter the industry. It gave me real insight into the behind-the-scenes of building a brand, while strengthening my personal skills on shoots, influencer marketing, and social media strategy. - Grace, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion

Applying Her Degree

Grace also shared how she found her studies on our BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion degree directly relevant:

I applied the skills I had developed on my degree. I drew on my ability to analyse a brand, explore its history, and use marketing tools such as social media strategy, campaign planning, and Excel to support influencer collaborations and content creation. Experiencing these skills in a professional setting gave me confidence in my abilities and a clearer sense of how they translate into the fashion industry.

Grace's Advice to Future Students

After finishing her placement, Grace shared one piece of advice that sums up her experience:

When people tell you your dreams won’t come true, never believe them. That's something I will remember throughout the rest of my career, so if there was any advice I would give to someone, it would be that. - Grace Victoria Lees, BA (Hons) Marketing & Communication for Fashion
