We recently caught up with current student Rebecca Fuller to find out what it’s really like to study Level 4 Garment Technology and to hear about an exciting project she’s been working on.

the Project

For this project, Rebecca focused on the brand Stella McCartney, exploring how the company works across sustainability, costing, trend research and fit sessions.

I chose to focus on Stella McCartney for my project 3 because I really wanted to learn more about sustainability and I felt that this brand was perfect for that due to the high end, sustainable aspects and beliefs they follow. - Rebecca Fuller, Level 4 Garment Technology Diploma student

After researching the brand, Rebecca designed and created her own garment for a future Spring/Summer 2027 collection. She experienced the full process of garment development, from initial ideas through to the final outcome.

She began with research to make sure her design connected clearly to the brand, before moving on to sketching and developing her idea. She then created her own pattern and produced a toile (a test garment), which allowed her to review the fit. After making adjustments, she created a second toile to refine the design further before moving on to the final piece.

After I finally moved onto my final piece and due to my toiles I new exactly what I was doing and the only amendments I needed to make was making sure the garment was as clear, professional, and as high end I could make it.

Best Bit

For Rebecca, the highlight of the project was bringing her design to life.

The part of the project I enjoyed most was creating my garment as sewing and pattern cutting is something I have a big interest in so to create something new was really nice!

Life on the Course

Rebecca is really enjoying her time on the course, especially learning more about how the fashion industry works behind the scenes.

Everything I have learned on my course has really helped and pushed me to complete this project. We've had lessons throughout the year which has taught us key roles of a garment technologist and what they do on their day to day. I am also am loving the opportunities I have been given so far at the FRA such as going on trips to museums, fabric shows and working with stores around the UK!

Skills Developed

This project helped Rebecca grow in confidence, especially with her technical skills.

The skills I've developed in the project was mastering my pattern skills some more as I'm not the most confident so being able to learn more about the process was really enjoyable and interesting.

She also feels more prepared for her future career in fashion thanks to the course.

Studying at the FRA has really helped me prepare for my future career in fashion this is because of all the lessons we have had during the year has helped me understand what a garment technologist does which has helped me feel ready to step into a role. The challenge weeks have also helped and something I've found really interesting as we've been given opportunity's to work with brands and complete projects and briefs!

If you’re passionate about fashion and want to learn how designs become real, high-quality garments, Level 4 Garment Technology gives you the skills, confidence and industry experience to take that next step. Explore the course and apply today!
