FRA Student receives silver medal at EuroSkills with Team UK
Jasmine Field, a Level 4 Visual Display and Retail Branding student who graduated in July 2014, has achieved a silver medal in the World Skills competition in Visual Merchandising. The event, EuroSkills, was held in Lille in France and recognises young talent in the workplace. The final, World Skills, will take place in Sao Paulo in August 2015.
“When the FRA asked me to write about my experience at EuroSkills I decided I needed to sum up my whole week in one word. Climax - “the most intense, exciting or importance of something”. It describes exactly how my week competing was. Competing in front of 120,000 visitors alongside 415 other competitors in 40 different skills is definitely the most intense but exciting thing I have ever experienced and when the adrenaline kicks in; I can’t even begin to explain the emotions I felt. The pride you have makes you want to do the best you can to get the most out of those 3 days so no matter the result, you can come home with a sense of achievement.
While I was competing in Lille, we had three full days of competition. The first day we were given the theme and told to research to come up with a visual of what the window will look like. On the second day we had to prepare our props and then install them on the final day. You could say the week was smooth running but for Team UK it was far from that! We challenged the cleaners that were throwing our props away, to our roof collapsing and exploding lightbulbs! It really tested our limits but we fought back from all obstacles and proved how we could keep calm under pressure.
As a graduate of the FRA if anybody gets a chance to apply for World Skills then do! It is an amazing experience. You will meet the greatest bunch of people and who knows you may end up representing the country! It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and if you ever wanted to be a Olympian.. well now you can in the skill you are good at.”
